    In chapter 3 of book 2 the Bishop opens his house doors to Jean Valjean. Jean Valjean is released from 

prison for stealing a loaf of bread. In this chapter Jean Valjean is confused on why the Bishop let him stay 

in his home and didn't react like anybody else and scream or kick him out. We learn that Madame 

Maglorie doesn't trust Jean Valjean. Jean shares his experience about prison to the Bishop and is 

comforted by him.
