A WORD ABOUT MISERABLES
WEEK #5
Translation:
The artificial hells that the author refers to are pronounced by society; meaning that the people are
strongly stating punishments that should be given out and that are probably more serious than the crime
committed. Even when Jean comes out of prison he is treated either the same or worse for being prison
for just a little crime. The corruption of women through hunger is portrayed by Fantine. She becomes a
prostitute because she has nothing. Cossette is an example of the crippling children because she has eat
under the table at her foster parent’s home.
